September 2010

            School is in full swing for the month of September and our students are in their learning mode!  I would like to thank parents and students for their patience as we get adjusted to our bus schedules and routes. 
            Our character education initiative of universal expectations in key areas of the school routine and setting is fully implemented.  On Friday, August 27th we had ten students win prizes for earning Respect Rockets on the playground!  Congratulations to all for showing respect for others!  In September we will be working on respectful behavior in the lunchroom, hallway, bus, and bathroom.  Be on the lookout for those Respect Rockets! Be Respectful – Be Responsible – Be Peaceful!
            The week of September 13th will be Terra Nova testing for our 3rd grade students.  Please help students prepare for testing by making sure they have a nutritious breakfast, get plenty of rest, and assure them that doing their best is all it takes to be successful. 
            Reed will hold its second annual Safety Day on Wednesday, September 8th.  We will complete a lockdown drill with the Will County Sheriff’s Department, fire drill with Northwest Homer Fire Department, a tornado and shelter drill, and a bus evacuation drill with Positive Connections.  These drills will be spaced out throughout the day and teachers will prepare students for the day of safety in their classrooms.  Please share with your child how important it is to practice things that keep them safe.  Please call the office with any specific questions regarding this day’s activities.  Feedback from teachers, parents, and students over the last years indicated that this was an effective way to run through all these drills. We look forward to another successful day of teaching our students how to stay safe in a wide variety of circumstances.
            Students at Reed will be celebrating International Day of Peace on September 21st by displaying Pinwheels for Peace. Our students will be making Pinwheels for Peace during the month of September in their classrooms.  Each pinwheel created by students will be decorated with words and pictures representing the child’s view of peace and tolerance.  This project was started by two art teachers in from Florida in 2005 with about 500,000 pinwheels planted and grew to three million planted in 2009.  Reed will be planting our pinwheels in display boxes this year adding to that three million number!
